News from Ms. Powers’ Class

March 19, 2014

Reading-we just finished a unit that dealt with inferring.  Our next unit is working on retelling in particular making sure that everything is included in their retelling including author’s message.

Writing-we just started an opinion unit.  As we work through the unit the students will be writing a letter to the appropriate audience stating their opinion, reasons for their opinion and possible solutions.

Math-we are just finished a unit with 2D and 3D shapes and fractions.  Our next unit will involve graphing.  Students complete daily problem solvers at the beginning of the day and then share solutions and explanations at the beginning of our math lesson.

Behavior-we started using behavior necklaces right before our break.  Students receive a necklace at the beginning of the day.  Students keep their necklace by being a problem solver, following directions when they are given, and being respectful of others.  Students who keep their necklace are rewarded by occasional treats, being first to get ready or even additional recess.

Trimester 3-this is the last trimester of first grade.  We talk about becoming second graders and second grade behavior expectations.  Now is a good time for some extra reading practice at home to help students get to the grade level expectation of level 18.  If you need some books at your child’s reading level just let me know.  I have some paperback books that they can borrow to read at home.  Please look at the chart on the back that shows the benefits of reading at home over time.
